My brief summary of an initial strategy for removing PC malware - mainly for my own reference and a convenient place to access relevant download links. I'm not giving full step by step instructions on using these tools, just an outline of a guide which may prove useful.

Preliminary steps

These initial steps are not essential but can speed up subsequent scans significantly.

Close down all running programs and exit as many system tray processes as possible before using any of the tools below.

CCleaner

If possible download and install CCleaner (piriform.com) - run the default clean up to remove as many unnecessary files on the PC as possible. Then run the registry fix tool and accept all its recommended fixes, taking a backup of the registry changes when prompted.

Malware removal

Use the removal tools listed below until all are reporting clean scans.

In most cases follow the sequence

Malwarebytes -> AdwCleaner -> Malwarebytes -> AdwCleaner

Then if either of these is still detecting infections move onto Zoek and Hitman. Or for thoroughness run all four anyway!

Malwarebytes

Download and run the installer for Malwarebytes (malwarebytes.org)

Launch - don't choose the premium options, just use the free version - run the full scan and let Malwarebytes remove all the items the scan detects.

AdwCleaner

Download from AdwCleaner (toolslib.net) - run the executable file directly to scan and clean.

Zoek

Not necessary in all cases - usually only use if programs above have not solved malware symptoms.

Download from Zoek (hijackthis.nl) or Zoek alternate location (bleepingcomputer.com) - run the executable file directly form the desktop, initially just choosing the Auto Clean script options.

Hitman

Not necessary in all cases - usually only use if programs above have not solved malware symptoms.

Download from Hitman Pro (surfright.nl)

(This is only a 30 day trial version, so probably can only be used as a one-time emergency solution)
