General Sir John Hackett, 1910-1997
John Hackett commanded the 4th Parachute Brigade at Arnhem. However, I would like to extend my web content concerning Hackett beyond his participation in the battle.
His career, decorations and awards are outlined in this timeline. These three obituaries of Hackett also give a summary of his life and career, and fill in at least some of the detail:
- The Guardian 10th September 1997
- The Independent 11th September 1997
- The Times 10th September 1997
Expanding on Hackett’s time as GOC of the 7th Armoured Division and outlining some of the problems faced by the British Army at the time there is this short article written by Thomas Knott, who was with the HQ “G” 7 Armd Div in 1955/56 with Major-General Hackett.
A list of books written by Hackett is provided here – in addition he has authored the introductions and forewords to many other publications.
For another item of interest, visit the Arnhem commemorative items page to see a First Day Cover commemorating Operation Market Garden, signed by John Hackett, and, from 1971, I have this signed letter.
Finally, there is a gallery of photographs of John Hackett – I will add more as I find them.
