The Battle of Arnhem : 17th – 26th September 1944
A short summary of Operation Market Garden, of which the battle in and around Arnhem was just one part, is given here. The intention on these web pages is to present material relating to the Battle of Arnhem, generated (mainly) from sources relatively contemporary to the events. There are plenty of other internet sites and books giving very detailed information and analysis of all aspects of Operation Market Garden.
To start exploring these historical documents directly, go to this index of the source material.
Some of this material has been scanned from the original (60 year old) documents – so please excuse the quality of some of the images and occasional spelling errors caused by inaccurate character recognition. Converting these documents to an electronic format is very time consuming, but I try to check all the pages as thoroughly as possible – if you see any glaring errors, please let me know.
The source documents and photographs for a proportion of the material here are held, I believe, by the Museum of Army Flying, Middle Wallop, Stockbridge, Hampshire, UK. These documents are publicly available, and have been released as a set of document images on CD-ROM by the Archive Britain Campaign, but I have never seen direct transcriptions of many of them, either in print or on the internet. More documents and many of the archive photographs of the events are held by the Imperial War Museum, Lambeth Road, London, UK.
