BRITISH TANKS DRIVING ON TO ARNHEM
ENEMY SHELLED BY SECOND ARMY’S GUNS
RELIEF FOR AIRBORNE FORCE IMMINENT
AACHEN IN RING OF BATTLES
British tanks have crossed the Waal at Nijmegen and are driving northward to link up with the hard-pressed airborne force at Arnhem, on the Lek. Medium artillery of the Second Army was reported early to-day to be shelling targets indicated by the Arnhem force, whose relief is now regarded as imminent.

On both sides of Aachen heavy battles are in progress. In the northern sector American tanks are approaching Geilenkirchen, across the German frontier, and in the south troops are pushing slowly through the Siegfried line east of Stolberg.

The Poles have reached the Scheldt estuary at severl points round Terneuzen.
