2000 MEN RETURN FROM ARNHEM

The troops of the British 1st Airborne Division who could be withdrawn were brought back across the lower Rhine on Monday and Tuesday night after making their gallant stand in the Arnhem area since September 17,

The number of the division dropped for the operation, not counting several hundred glider pilots, was about 6,500, and of these about 2,000 have returned unwounded. Twelve hundred wounded men have had to be left behind, but an officer who has escaped since the evacuation has reported that the Germans were treating them with consideration.

The corridor of the Second Army’s northward advance into Holland is being steadily widened, and on the right flank general progress is being made towards the line of the Maas.
